About the Image(s)

Last year we concluded our African Photographic Safay in Arusha - Tanzania. Our guide took us to the local market. When we reached the butcher stores I walked into one of them when I saw these two men working on a large section and took several images, when they realized what was I doing they brought their arms forward covering most of thei faces and asking me to stop, which I did. I said thank you and walked away. As you can see they were using zero refrigeration and sanitary protection except for the white coats.
The image was created with the Nikon Z8 and the Nikkor zoom lens 24-200 mm f/4-6.3 @ 38mm and these settings: ISO 10000 (Auto setting), f/8 and 1/160 sec. The image was PP in LightRoom including the new DeNoise feauture, and cropped.

Hello Isaac!
I really like this image since it highlights the working conditions in the markets of these countries (without refrigeration and without health protection) as you say.
Interesting capture due to their attitude in front of the camera. I think you didn't continue taking more photos because you were scared by the look of the man with the knife :)   Posted: 04/04/2024 05:12:05

The image is too raw for me to watch. Unable to observe. Pl excuse me for the comments   Posted: 04/07/2024 02:15:07

I feel there is a clear story of a way some foods get to the market and the rawness Vinaya mentions is part of the story. I think the expressions on the faces is compelling, and the composition tells the story succinctly. And as a personal bias, with all the lines in the image, I truly appreciate that all the lines that should be vertical are straight and all the lines that should be horizontal are also straight!   Posted: 04/07/2024 09:01:49

Ardeth, I always make the lines straight in their direction. It is a step in my workflow.   Posted: 04/18/2024 11:26:51

It is very interesting to see what raw meat looks like. It is great that your guide could take you there. Karen Kohn   Posted: 04/10/2024 12:02:43

A great image Isaac, and a wonderful story behind it. The butchers in third world countries will always generate some emotion from the viewer. To me the story is all about these men, their lives and the normal health standards of these people. I thnk it's important that the rest of the world see this, to make us humble and grateful. Photojournalism has never been apologetic to show the world the truth.
Its a strong image, with a good HI story.   Posted: 04/11/2024 01:40:40

Jennifer said it all! I also wondered where their gloves were! Great image Isaac!   Posted: 04/16/2024 09:39:56

Isaac

It is interesting to see the contrast in hygiene conditions for food preparation in various cultures with only one man with a head cover, and neither wearing gloves. The men appear perfectly positioned on each side of the animal and I see how the perspective was carefully chosen to avoid the appearance of a hook going through the head of the man on the right.

If you had not provided the background on your image, I would have thought that the men were co-operative and posed for you. This shows your skill in understanding where to stand and how to frame and compose to tell the story.   Posted: 04/11/2024 05:46:53

Think you took them off guard in your first photo. They do not seem very happy here!   Posted: 04/16/2024 09:37:15
