Fire Twirler by Tom Brott

January 2025 - Fire Twirler

About the Image(s)

This image was taken in Key West, Florida at Mallory Square Sunset Celebration where street performers gather nightly to put on there acts for modest donations. This gentleman caught my eye as we were walking through the square and I tried to capture the movement of the fire being twirled around him.

Very old Canon 50D (without all the modern settings and capabilities) , f/4.5, 1/4 second, ISO 100, 60mm from a 28 to 105 lens. Hand held.

I really like this one. Don't know how you managed to get his face to not be covered with the fire. Is there any chance you can dodge his face a little to make it even more visible? You might also want to burn the bright spots in the background.   Posted: 01/12/2025 17:54:33

Hi Tom, a great action shot and you have caught a perfect moment where the man's face is evident amid the fire swirls.
Given that there are some brighter areas in the background, you might want to lighten up the man's face to make him more obvious. Yes, there are some unwanted distractions in the background, but there is little you can do about this, the story is still strong. Personally I'd like to see this a bit wider as the onlookers make the story stronger, and their reaction can really add to the story.   Posted: 01/12/2025 18:18:42

Hi Tom. A fine action shot and would be improved by Leslie and Jen's suggestion of reducing the shadows on the fire throwers face. You have done well to capture the face intact at shutter 1/4 without tripod or monopod.   Posted: 01/12/2025 23:59:56

This is such a cool image - I love that his face is in focus even with the motion of the fire   Posted: 01/13/2025 00:07:45

With only a little dodging and burning...see what you think   Posted: 01/13/2025 22:13:45
