About the Image(s)

This photo I love for the sheer joy they show on their faces, was taken at
a retirement home dance in Monterey, CA some years ago. I'm going
to pretend they are celebrating New Year's Eve.
Canon Rebel T3i, f/4, 1/160, ISO 400.

This is a lovely and quite intimate moment for this couple, and you have done well to share this emotion. Given that we see no further details about the event or the location I believe that this might be misinterpreted by a judge as a 'staged image'. PJ will always be judged differently from open competition as we are always looking for the story, and including more of the environment will always help to make the story stronger.
I see good technical choices although a shutter of 1/150th sec might be a little slow if the was a lot of movement.   Posted: 01/12/2025 18:14:00

Hi Leslie. A very fun shot showing two seniors enjoying each others company dancing. The black background does make the photo look portrait style and it may be better received in a Peoples category. Of course you may have taken the photo in a very dark background situation and have only processed the two people. I take many photos like these covering night sports with the same result as yours. A fine photo covering a topic that many avoid because they are oldies.   Posted: 01/12/2025 18:23:14

It was a dark evening, outside dance with a band. I probably made it look even darker. It was definitely not staged. I just loved the twinkle in their eyes which is why I made it a close-up. Perhaps it should be in people instead.   Posted: 01/12/2025 18:32:19

I love the joy in this image and the pops of red and gold. It's cool how the print of the bandana on his neck continues into the print of her shirt. It's a lovely image.   Posted: 01/13/2025 00:06:14

Thanks Muthoni, I hadn't even noticed the color similarity. Yes, it's the joy of the moment that I liked.   Posted: 01/13/2025 09:39:47
