About the Image(s)

This was taken in Kuching, Borneo, last year, on a day we just got to ‘wander’ around the streets. The people of Borneo were wonderful, friendly, happy to have their pictures taken and love to see themselves on the back of the camera. This chap was just one of many tailors that set up trade on the pavement, equipped with an old treadle machine. It brought back memories of learning to sew on a similar machine back in 1969!

Settings:
Taken on Olympus EM1 mk2, Oly 12-100mm lens @25mm
F7.1, SS 1/60th sec, ISO 1250

I had one of these also when living in a cabin with no electricity about the same timeline as yours. I love this photo...he looks very pleased with what he is doing. It doesn't seem he feels he has a sad or unpleasant life. Colors nicely muted, focus sharp. I'm glad you didn't zoom in any farther, the staircase and other stuff add to the total feeling for the place.   Posted: 05/06/2025 17:22:30

Hi Jen. A very gritty photo showing how small business people operate in the third world. No air con factories, fancy mannequin dummies showing their products no smartly dressed receptionist. What you see is who will fulfill your order. A relative of mine would go to Bali and get tailor made suits from something similar. This scene is rather timeless, always been like this, except multi coloured thongs.   Posted: 05/08/2025 02:07:11
