Fire Serpent Dance by Tom Brott

September 2025 - Fire Serpent Dance

About the Image(s)

I was in a small town in upstate New York that was hosting a "Native American Festival". I figured this event would be a great place to capture some great images. My intent was capturing something unique and different and not witnessed by many people. This image is from a group from Mexico City that were dressed in ritual costumes of the AZTEC INDIANS. The dancer in this image was performing a dance to the FIRE SERPENT GOD. I wanted to capture the use of fire in an image. The set up for the performers was not ideal as it was ground level with bales of hay in a large circle and vendor tents and food tents set up around the outside of that. The weather was less than ideal with heavy overcast and at times a light drizzle. I chose a very tight crop to try and minimize the outside distractions.
Shot with Canon R5, f/10, 1/250 sec, ISO 2000, 24 to 70mm lens at 34mm.

wow, now that's a costume! Love that you managed to get such a good close-up view of the dancer...he fit in your frame by kneeling...how nice of him.   Posted: 09/01/2025 15:52:21

Hi Tom. A very interesting photo and excellent choice of subject, the only issue I have is that the fire is small and not quite illuminating enough. I wonder if you did not apply any Luminance or Saturation to the photo of these regions, don't know if allowed in HI but worth a try. As it stands a very good HI photo.
Submitted my style of adjustment as mentioned above.   Posted: 09/01/2025 17:12:46

Ron, thanks for the suggestions and a rework. If I remember correctly you can use only some global adjustments when editing. Hopefully Jen will be able to better input on what is allowed in PJHI images.   Posted: 09/01/2025 17:25:36

Tom - I like this image a lot! The detail in the dancer's dress and the vibrancy of the colors really stand out. Two small details took a while for me to notice, but now keep emerging as I stare at the photo: (1) the fire on the dancer's hands (incredible!) and (2) the person seated in the rear at the upper-right. A person seated in the rear could easily have been a distraction but, at least for me, this one only adds interest.   Posted: 09/02/2025 06:21:40
