Hurricane Erin by Richard Goldenberg

November 2025 - Hurricane Erin

About the Image(s)

I took this photograph on August 21, 2025. On that day, Hurricane Erin was passing up the east coast of the US. Although it was about two hundred miles offshore, it stirred up some big waves, at least by Martha’s Vineyard standards.

I went to the beach to photograph the waves and so did Bob, the gentleman shown in the photo. I was already on the beach when Bob arrived and he introduced himself to me. He was curious about my camera gear and we chatted for a few moments after which he walked towards the shore to take some photographs. About ten minutes later, I noticed him in front of me and snapped a few photos of him. I then approached Bob, showed him the photos I had taken of him and offered to send him the photos. He was thrilled, we exchanged contact information, and I later sent him the raw files. We only met that one time, but he now regularly comments (favorably) when I post bird photos to a Facebook group. Perhaps he always did, but now I recognize his name in the comments.

I took the photo with my Canon R7, with an 18-150 mm zoom lens set to 60 mm. The settings were 1/80 s, f/11 and ISO of 100.

Good beach shot. Waves that big aren't all that unusual in other areas even without a hurricane coming. Perhaps Martha's Vineyard is protected normally? I like the lowering clouds and the spindrift blown by the wind. Bob is an interesting subject for your photo. He blends in so well with the color scheme.   Posted: 11/04/2025 11:20:49
