May 2026 - Crowded Car

About the Image(s)

On April 20, 2026, the day for the running of the Boston Marathon, I found myself in a very crowded car on Boston's subway system. I wanted to grab a photo conveying the sense of how tightly we were packed together. I almost always have the camera right up to my face, so I can look through the viewfinder, but photos taken that way were not working. The only thing I could think to do was to hold the camera high above my head, point it into the crowd and "shoot blind." This is the result.

Camera settings were 1/400 sec, f 3.5, and ISO of 6400. Those settings could and should have been varied quite a bit, starting with lowering the ISO, but I didn't have the presence of mind while packed in with that crowd, to do that. Photo was taken with my Canon R7 and an 18-150 mm lens set at 18 mm.

Hello Richard, I think you have a great story in your image this month, with a busy, and seemingly happy crowd on the subway. Shooting 'blind' can sometimes work well, especially when people are unaware of what you are doing. Its always worth a try.
The main subject appears to be the man on the left, with a wry smile, and he is facing the camera.
The only problem for me is the light on the train, that has fooled your camera, and looks very yellow. I've had a go at correcting the white balance, as well as a little sharpness. I'll leave it to you to decide if you like it better.   Posted: 05/17/2026 16:49:46

I was going to say the same as Jen. The color needs correcting, but otherwise, a great catch. The spirit of the crowd is contagious.   Posted: 05/17/2026 18:36:41

Hi Richard, Sometimes we run into mixed lighting situations that are hard to correct. When that happens, the photographer can always resort to black & white and then play with dodging/burning to slightly emphasize the faces. While I believe that this is a festive, safe situation, in some countries it would be pickpocket paradise. Tilting LCD screens are a help in these situations.
