About the Image(s)

I have been documenting Hosier Lane (a lane in Melbourne covered in Street Art) now for many years, documenting the changing artwork and the community that live there. There is always something happening in the lane, and on this occasion, a family of children playing in and out of the side lanes and corners. With children spending so much time indoors I miss seeing them just running and playing about.

Technical: Taken on Olympus EM1 mk2 with Olympus 12-100f4 pro lens@ 100mm.
Settings: f5, SS 1/100, ISO 1000

Hi Jen. An interesting backdrop for the photo, colourful and grungy a perfect place to get HI photos. Harking back to my childhood in inner city Melbourne that's where I played many childhood games. Even the use of fingers tell a story, mine was imitating hand guns from the many Western Cowboy films and TV shows we watched on our first B&W TV. This boy may be imitating a ray gun or some modern hand weapon. Young boys just want to control their environment and feel powerful, that's HI in this photo I see.
This photo may also work in B&W.   Posted: 04/07/2024 00:48:30

Thanks Ron, I did try mono but I felt that it lost the 'childhood' feel that colors bring to the image. This was also taken in Hosier Lane where there is lots of graffiti and street art that brings a lot of color. I did chuckle about the change from real guns to laser beams.   Posted: 04/07/2024 01:48:23

Hello Jen, this is my first comment in this group so pardon me if I make any mistakes. I stand to learn. Now about the image, I really liked the image. The boy, his hands and the graffiti works - it is a colorful composition. I loved it. Also it makes me ask for more. I really want to see beyond, like whats on the right side, how would it look if you included that black dustbin a bit more. This photo was a nice treat.

Thank you and hope to learn more.   Posted: 04/07/2024 07:13:05

Thank you Arunanjan, nice comments.
To help you with your comments you might like to think about these points. (1) always consider the story first, what do you think the story is, does the story interest you (2) think about whether you feel it is a strong story, or that perhaps you dont see or understand the story (3) think about what emotions the might bring for you. Lastly consider the aesthetics (the settings, the editing, the composition). Since this is also a group for Human Interest, you must consider if the image includes a person/s in an unusual, interative or emotional situation.
So when I look at your comments - they are great!

Nice action capture. I like the color...B&W not so interesting.
The hand signals are new to me. The old shooting pistol ones were obvious. Glad you cropped out the garbage container altho it might have made the composition more gritty. Any possibility of straightening the image just a tad?   Posted: 04/09/2024 10:09:11

thanks Leslie, I thought I did straighten (I'm usually a but pendantic about that) but you are right, it is a bit off!.
As for the rubbish bins, in this laneway the bins are also covered in graffiti, so generally I leave them in.   Posted: 04/11/2024 01:34:29
