Big Shoes to Fill by Ron Davis

April 2024 - Big Shoes to Fill

About the Image(s)

While doing one of my typical street walks in San Antonio Chile I came across a very large pair of shoes on the footpath and before long a man came and stood in them. Well this I thought was the story of many lives especially first born children. Note the high shutter speed 1/2000 I used max for this camera but ideal for impromptu photography as you will reduce motion blur and camera shake.

Camera Panasonic Lumix FZ150, Focal length equivalent 95mm 35mm equivalent, 1/2000, F4, ISO 200

Processing Lightroom, Auto, cropped.

Hi Ron, that's a funny story and the man's expression is quite unique. It's a pity that the light is so harsh (yes I know that you can't help this, and you take the opportunities when you can), but the shadow of the light pole falls right across the man's feet (the shoes are the story).
I'm surprised at how much detail is in the background with an aperture of f4 and it is a bit distracting. It looks like your focal point was not on the man's face. I'm wondering if this was an image you could have taken from a different angle.   Posted: 04/09/2024 04:17:53

Hi Jen. Using a 2/3 crop sensor camera makes little difference between F4 and the cameras max F8 in terms of depth of field. The background is nearly always in reasonable focus, annoying sometimes but that's the nature of the beast. Yes, you could use a Full Frame camera and the background especially with F2.8 or lower lens would produce background blurring but then you look very obvious and when travelling that's a lot of extra weight to carry around. For sports photography in Melbourne I usually photo with APSC or Full Frame and 600mm Sigma lens F6.3, my most serious consideration is car parking near the event?   Posted: 04/09/2024 06:33:56

Ron, I agree with all of this and you have to use the equipment you own with all the limitations, especially travel.   Posted: 04/09/2024 15:20:34

Are the shoes a permanent sculpture? Pretty funny. I agree the street is too bright and the shadows distracting, but they'd be there from any angle at that time of day. I bet lots of people get in the shoes for a photo op.   Posted: 04/09/2024 10:12:43

Yes, Leslie they are nailed to the footpath and the timing re light was not the best, middle of the day. You can only do what is possible within the timeframe of busy travel, perhaps a pro photog would take this picture at dusk or near sunset but he/she would expect to be paid money for something similar.   Posted: 04/09/2024 17:02:23
