Rural Barber in Columbia by Leslie Larson

April 2024 - Rural Barber in Columbia

About the Image(s)

I passed a local barber giving a shave in NW Colombia . Sort of captures the flavor of the area. Apparently, now this area is flooded with hopeful migrants heading to the Darien Gap.

Hi Leslie
there is a lovely little story here about the barber and the environment he works in. Its good that you included some of the background that helps to tell the story. I like the fact that the bikes are parked nearby, and that another 'customer' is waiting. There is a lot of roof in this image and since its quite bright it does overwhelm your story. A little bit of a crop and some dodging and burning (allowed within the editing guidelines) makes the customer more obvious.   Posted: 04/09/2024 04:12:45

I agree the thatch can be cut back. I also like the bikes parked there. As to the next comment, I always try to be incognito and not let the subjects know I am taking the photo.

Getting down and making myself obvious is not an option. Also I am at an age when "getting down on my haunches" is not physically possible...bad knees.   Posted: 04/09/2024 09:54:57

Hi Leslie. A fine story photo capturing people in a natural setting possibly a rural area of Colombia. I don't quite agree with Jen's assessment of the bikes especially the green one that draws your eye away from the people in the barber shop. I do agree with her assessment of the thatched roof, this may have been overcome if you are flexible and to have got down on your haunches and shot from a lower position, almost putting the camera on the ground. The Canon 77D I am sure has a tilt screen so it means bending your back rather than laying on the ground tilting the screen towards you and shooting up into the shop. This position would also have captured the barber better rather than showing only his lower face.   Posted: 04/09/2024 07:06:31

Ron, if you have to think and take the time to do all you suggested, you will loose the decisive moment, unless you are already prepared.   Posted: 04/14/2024 18:21:09
